Multiple instances

I currently have 11 instances of FF running.

I've tried to set the instances to one in the preferences menu. When I go to performance and uncheck "use reccomended performance setting", there is no option to set the number to 1. I have also set browser.tabs.remote.autostart to false in config, which was another recommendation.

I've read that this is supposed to be normal. 11 running processes in the background is not normal in my book and obvioulsy unneccessary because you can manually turn all but one off with no penalty, except for the users time and patience of course. Please let me know how to fix this issue. Those people who want the "advantage" of multiple processes should be allowed to have it and those that don't ought to have that option as well.

I have been a fan and user of FF almost since the begining, but if this is something that can't be fixed, I will try my luck somewhere else.

You could try changing the following preferences in about:config. You will need to restart the browser for the changes to take effect. fission.autostart (change to false) fission.experiment.enrollmentStatus (change to 1).

Thank you but that didn't help. I made changes, closed FF and reopened. Immediately checked Task Manager and had 6 instances of FF running. I noticed there was a "fission.autostart.session" but didn't want to mess with changing that as well since you didn't mention it.

With fission disabled, you can regulate the number of processes in Settings (General page under Performance). 6 doesn't seem out of the ordinary to me.

Thanks again for your time on this. I really appreciate it.

I set the instances to 1 (it had been set on 8) but that made no difference. I understand that multiple instances might be better for some, perhaps most, users. What bothers me is that I apparently have no choice in the matter, even though the option makes it seem like the choice is mine. I'm not asking FF to change it's general procedure. I'm simply saying I should be able to make adjustments to fit my usage. This has always been my experience until now.

Once again, I appreciate your taking the time to address my concern.

If you are referring to the Windows Task Manager, I think that's a function of your operating system. My system has something similar and I can't make head nor tail of the processes it lists.

Yes, Task Manager. You can "end task" on all the multiple FF processes, leaving just one, and nothing changes except your computer is using fewer resources. Anyway, I think we are at the end of this adventure. Thanks again for your time.
