I am having problems with my bookmarks as they are no longer there and trying to add new ones i can't do that either...I have tried everything and nothing works...My os is windows 7 and i have just updates to the latest version of firefox and i tried to go into manage bookmarks and then i tried to click import and backup...Then i tried restore which showed me a list..So i tried to click one on that list and this is the message i got....This will replace all of your current bookmarks with the backup. Are you sure?..So i clicked that where it says ok and instead of getting my bookmarks back i got this message..Unable to process the backup file...No matter which one i tried as i have a few of them i would always get this message and before that the message i would get when i opened firefox is...The bookmarks and history system will not be functional because one of firefox's files is in use with another application...Some security software can cause this problem...I checked on the learn more section and tried what it mentioned to still no avail....I am at a loss to why i can't ind my bookmarks or add new ones which can't be done either...I need help big time

Sorry to hear about this problem.

First, if you haven't already, please do a normal shutdown and/or restart of your system. Restarting Windows can help by freeing up locked files, completing any deferred updates, and resolving temporary file permission issues.

Next, if Firefox still has bookmark problems, could you let us know what you get when you run the "Verify Integrity" diagnosis and repair function. That's here:

Open Firefox's Troubleshooting Information page using any of these methods:

  • "3-bar" menu button > Help > More Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > More Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

Near the bottom, there is a section titled Places Database -- that's the file which stores history and bookmarks. Click the button labeled Verify Integrity. There may be a 10-15 second delay before results appear.

If all is well, the report that appears below the button should start with:

> Task: checkIntegrity
+ The places.sqlite database is sane
+ The favicons.sqlite database is sane
> Task: invalidateCaches
+ The caches have been invalidated
> Task: checkCoherence
+ The database is coherent

Does yours say that, or something else? You can select and copy the report, and then paste it into a reply for review and comment.

If that doesn't make bookmarks work, you might need this article at that point: Fix "The bookmarks and history system will not be functional" error message.

This is the message i get when i try verify integrity... > Task: checkIntegrity + The places.sqlite database is sane + The favicons.sqlite database is sane > Task: invalidateCaches - Unable to invalidate caches > Task: checkCoherence - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task. > Task: expire - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task. > Task: originFrecencyStats - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task. > Task: vacuum - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task. > Task: stats - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task. > Task: _refreshUI - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task.

Before this i tried a shutdown and it did not return back to how it should be...I do not know what is preventing me from seeing my bookmarks or adding new ones as this all happened with the latest update of firefox..I have not installed any other program

If you use Sync then best is to disconnect Sync temporarily during troubleshooting.

If errors are reported with "Verify Integrity", close and restart Firefox or reboot and retry.

If "Verify Integrity" cannot repair places.sqlite, rename/remove all places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed. Firefox will rebuild places.sqlite and restore the bookmarks from the most recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

  • keep a backup copy of places.sqlite in case a new places.sqlite database has to be created
  • you lose the history when a new places.sqlite is created

You may have to restore an older bookmarks backup in the bookmarkbackups folder via the Bookmarks Manager (Library).

You can use the button on the "Help -> More Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page (Root directory).

I have tried all that and even uninstalled a couple of programs which i thought maybe would block firefox from showing bookmarks or saving and still no go...I tried to reboot computer and nothing changed...There has been nothing i tried to get it working and this all happened when i had the newest version of firefox installed or updated...I really have no idea what to do as i am so very frustrated this is not working...Am so frustrated that if this does not get resolved i am going to change browsers

If any errors are reported: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/fix-bookmarks-and-history-will-not-be-functional

The places.sqlite file contains your History and Bookmarks. And it looks like it is corrupted.

Type about:support<enter> in the address box.

Under the page logo on the left side, you will see Application Basics. Under this find Profile Folder. To its right press the button Show Folder. This will open your file browser to the current Firefox profile. Now Close Firefox.

Locate the above file. Then rename or delete it. Restart Firefox. The browser should then create a new place.sqlite and recover your bookmarks from the backup files.

Note: Your history is not backed up and will be lost.
