(1) "Send" functions frequently hang. Hit "send", message hangs, then reply says: "Confirm": "Retry". Hit "retry" and get "Confirm". Finally, his "Cancel" and message disappears. Sometimes, message is sent to "Drafts" and can try to re-send. Then, if I'm very nice to the message, it sends. It's all very mysterious! As a backup-workaround, I copy the message I've written and, thereby, don't lose it for a subsequent "Retry". Sometimes I get "Send Message Error. Sending of the message failed." No explanation. (2)-(3). I have a lot of folders. On the list of folders, those at the top of the list usually show content more readily than folders that are down the list. Sometimes, I go up and down the list until I find a folder that opens; then, I go "down the ladder", hoping to open the folder that I really need. With enough patience, eventually the folder I want will open. But it is very time-consuming and feels like throwing dice until I get a random hit. When opening Thunderbird, sometimes I get a message that says: "Unable to load address book file abook.mab. It may be read-only, or locked by another application. Please try again later." I shut down T-Bird, then re-open and cross fingers. Sometimes the folders show, sometimes not.

Sometimes, messages send easily and induce a sense of relief--only to be followed, after a short time, by a return to abovementioned symptoms.

To diagnose problems with Thunderbird, try one of the following:

  • Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.
  • Restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX
If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.

rwestman,

What did you find using Matt's suggestion??

And, you wrote "I have a lot of folders." Please tell us how many folders, and how many accounts, and how many virtual folders (saved searches)?

Also, do you have any non-default fonts installed on the Mac, for example from publishing software
