Firefox says it's up to date while it's not
One of my Firefox instance stays in 47.0.1 for months. Help > About always says it's up to date.

Websites say that Firefox is outdated or incompatible even though it's the latest version https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/websites-say-firefox-outdated-or-incompatible

I created a new profile, so 1. No any customized UserAgent settings 2. No AddOns 3. No Cookies
And, yes, the Firefox still says it's up-to-date. It's 47.0.1, while current version (in release channel) is 49.0.1.

Hi,
On your screenshot 'Firefox is updated' is greyed out ........
Try clicking 'What's new' (next to 47.0.1).

It just pops a new tab with release notes of 47.0.1, doesn't help.
hi, if you have not set firefox to update automatically, you may have to manually install the following hotfix addon to be able to jump over 47.0.1... https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/firefox-hotfix/
the reason for this is a bit complicated - it's basically a certain third-party software ("websense") that causes firefox 48+ to crash on startup so we are only updating installations where we know that they aren't users of this thirdparty tool at the moment.

The description of the AddOn: "There is no need to install this add-on; starting in Firefox 11, it will be automatically installed." So what should I trust?
if you haven't set firefox to update automatically it won't be installed by its own in the background and that's why you get the problem...

So I have to choose to let my firefox update automatically from now on, or never update forever? (despite fresh install solution)

no that's not the choice: this addon is just necessary once due to the extraordinary circumstances i've explained in my first reply - please install it manually for that reason!

Consider the facts:
- No Websense installed
- Fresh new profile -- means no customized UA, no AddOns, etc.
- "Check for updates, but let me choose whether to install them" selected -- NOT "Never check for updates (not recommended: security risk)"
And the result is: it just won't update.
The only "fix", other than a fresh re-install newer version, is to install a badly documented AddOn, and I am not sure about what's the side-effect for installing it. Most important, the whole steps are not officially documented.
This company just abandoned some of Firefox 47 users.
Still thanks for trying to answer the question.
mozilla is certainly not abandoning those users! there are plans for a 47.0.2 release that might go out next week which also contains the websense detection logic...
