Firefox planning to kill Adobe Flash support from Version 48 ? When this is going to be effective and what is the plan.

Hi,

Our product is very much dependent on Firefox as our users access this from Firefox browsers and the application has adobe flash contents. They are not videos or ads, they are built on flash and has controls like drop down, check boxes, text fields, buttons , radio buttons etc.

From two different articles we came to know that Firefox is planning to kill the Adobe Flash support sooner or later and the last version which will have this support is version 48. We are already into version 47.

Could you please give us few information which would help us to decide how long users will be able to use Adobe Flash contents from Firefox. When this version 48 of Firefox is going to be released ? Is this assumption correct that from version 49 or so, this support will no longer be there, and if Yes then how much do we have in hand.

All these questions are very much important and I would request Mozilla Team to please give as an idea on this and let us know so that our business and user valuable users are not impacted by this major change.

The links that we referred are these -

Basically, the plan is to go with "Click-to-play" "user approval" with Flash in 2017, but not to "kill" Flash as with all other NPAPI plugins in March 2017 with Firefox 52.

Flash will "live on" for quite awhile it looks like. Overall, now is the time to be making plans for the future of your product, sans Flash.

I think that second article is just wrong; the first one is more accurate.

If you are concerned about the new Flash block list in Firefox 48, you probably shouldn't be. Most Flash will NOT be blocked in Firefox 48. There will be a specific short list of SWF files that are blocked, based on their apparent use in tracking (browser fingerprinting or settings Flash "supercookies"). So far, this list is pretty short and it's unlikely to affect typical web use.

Longer term, Firefox will switch Flash from "Always Activate" permission to "Ask to Activate" permission, like other plugins. If you are not familiar with how this works, you should TEST NOW and see how to you want to assist users who come to your app with that configuration.

To set "Ask to Activate", open the Add-ons page using either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Plugins. On the right side, look for "Shockwave Flash" and change "Always Activate" to "Ask to Activate".

User Experience: With this setting, when you visit a site that wants to use Flash, you should see a notification icon in the address bar and usually (but not always) one of the following: a link in a black rectangle in the page or an infobar sliding down between the toolbar area and the page.

The plugin notification icon in the address bar typically looks like a small, dark gray Lego block. When the page wants to use a blocked plugin, the icon turns red to alert you to the concern.

If you see a good reason to use Flash, and the site looks trustworthy, you can go ahead and click the notification icon in the address bar to allow Flash. You can trust the site for the time being or permanently.

But some pages use Flash only for tracking or playing ads, so if you don't see an immediate need for Flash, feel free to ignore the notification! It will just sit there in case you want to use it later.

Developer Tips: Your scripts can detect the presence of the Flash, but you cannot rely on presence any more, you need to test for whether Flash actually loads.

This option has existed for many versions -- I have used it myself since it first became available -- so you'll probably find a number of solutions online for how your page can know when Flash needs to be activated.
