Try to rename the cert8.db file (cert8.db.old) and delete the cert_override.txt file in the Firefox profile folder to remove intermediate certificates and exceptions that Firefox has stored.

If that has helped to solve the problem then you can remove the renamed cert8.db.old file. Otherwise you can rename (or copy) the cert8.db.old file to cert8.db to restore the previously stored intermediate certificates. Firefox will automatically store intermediate certificates when you visit websites that send such a certificate. If that didn't help then also try to remove/rename the secmod.db file.

You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.

I tried your suggestions but I am still having the same problem. i was thinking about doing a clean boot install or windows 10 pro, but i don't know if it would fix the problem. Any suggestions about what I should do next?

Before doing anything drastic, could you try this, in case Firefox's program files have become corrupted:

Clean Reinstall

We use this name, but it's not about removing your settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean (no inconsistent or alien code files). As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. Do NOT uninstall Firefox, that's not needed.

(A) Download a fresh installer for Firefox 44.0.2 from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ to a convenient location. (Scroll down to your preferred language.) For maximum compatibility, choose the 32-bit version.

(B) Exit out of Firefox (if applicable).

(C) Rename the program folder as follows:

(32-bit Firefox on 64-bit Windows)

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files (x86)\OldFirefox

(Other systems)

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files\OldFirefox

(D) Run the installer you downloaded in step (A). It should automatically connect to your existing settings.

Will Firefox start up?

Note: Some plugins may exist only in that OldFirefox folder. If something essential is missing, look in these folders:

• \OldFirefox\Plugins
• \OldFirefox\browser\plugins

In case there are other issues in the settings folder, you could do this three-minute experiment:

Create a new Firefox profile

A new profile will have your system-installed plugins (e.g., Flash) and extensions (e.g., security suite toolbars), but no themes, other extensions, or other customizations. It also should have completely fresh settings databases and a fresh cache folder.

Exit Firefox and start up in the Profile Manager using the Windows Run dialog (Window key + r) or the system search box -- paste the following and press Enter:

firefox.exe -P

Don't delete anything here!

Any time you want to switch profiles, exit Firefox and return to this dialog.

Click the Create Profile button, assign a name like TEST2016, and skip the option to relocate the profile folder. After creating the profile, select it and start Firefox in that profile.

Any difference?

When returning to the Profile Manager, you might be tempted to use the Delete Profile button. But... it's a bit too easy to accidentally delete your "real" profile, so I recommend resisting the temptation. If you do want to clean up later, I suggest making a backup of all your profiles first in case something were to go wrong.

Tried your suggestion. Firefox still doesn't work correctly. I can't edit the background, I can't view everything from the mozilla help menu and it is still saying connection not secured for most of my sites.

-- the problem usually is one of the following:

(1) Error in your system's date, time, or time zone, which throws off certificate validity checks. Sometimes allowing computers to use an internet-based time source can introduce this problem.

(2) Firefox not being set up to work with your security software that intercepts and filters secure connections. Products with this feature include Avast, BitDefender, Bullguard, ESET, and Kaspersky; AVG LinkScanner / SurfShield can cause this error on search sites.

(3) On Windows 10, Firefox not being set up to work with the parental control software Microsoft Family Safety. (To test by turning it off, see: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/wi.../turn-off-microsoft-family-settings)

(4) Malware on your system intercepting secure connections.

If none of those ring a bell:

You could inspect a sample certificate to see whether that points to the culprit. If you want to try that now, here's how I suggest starting:

You likely will get an error page. Expand the "Advanced" button and look for an Add Exception button.

Note: You don't need to complete the process of adding an exception -- I suggest not adding one until we know this isn't a malware issue -- but you can use the dialog to view the information that makes Firefox suspicious.

Click Add Exception, and the certificate exception dialog should open.

Click the View button. If View is not enabled, try the Get Certificate button first.

This should pop up the Certificate Viewer. Look at the "Issued by" section, and on the Details tab, the Certificate Hierarchy. What do you see there? I have attached a screen shot for comparison.

I tried your idea about making a new firefox profile and I still had the same problems. As for this solution, I kept getting bsod with some different error messages that caused firefox to crash everytime I tried to open it. Then these problems started to happen. I don't know why and how to prevent them from happening again.

Blue screen crashes usually involve a device driver incompatibility, most commonly display drivers since those are a browser's bread and butter. Firefox's Safe Mode minimizes the potential for those kinds of crashes because it disables Firefox's hardware acceleration features. More on the later.

Could you keep a camera handy and photograph the blue screen if you see it again? There certainly are a range of possible issues, including bad memory chips, but I don't know whether you can extract the information post-crash or the only chance to see it is that blue screen.

Could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? In Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

• "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
• Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

You can disable Firefox from using hardware acceleration here:

"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced

On the "General" mini-tab, uncheck the box for "Use hardware acceleration when available"

This takes effect the next time you start Firefox in regular (non-Safe) mode.

I need to know if firefox will work in the newest version of Windows 10 Pro. I downloaded and installed version 1511 build and I started having problems with firefox. Should I have any problems with the browser or maybe it is with the new Windows 10 Pro build.

Is that a standard update that everyone should have received recently? If so, we could expect to see a lot of reports of whatever the latest symptoms are. (I'm pretty sure Microsoft doesn't give Mozilla pre-release versions of Windows for testing, so past threads may not be helpful.)

I just finished re-installing windows 10 build 10 1511 and it seems to have fixed whatever has been causing the problem with firefox. I just hope that it doesn't happen again. Any thoughts about how to prevent that from happening again?
