How can I remove the search engine on my New Tabs page?

more options

Hello,

a year or two ago I spent hours trying to find an answer to this question and I did manage to do it, but sadly a couple weeks back I had an unplanned data loss, and I'm unable to find any solution to my problem anymore.

By 'search engine on my New Tabs page', I mean the dialogue box with search engine of choice that wasn't there in earlier version of FireFox. I want it gone. Not changed to Yahoo, Bing or anything else - just gone.

If I recall, the solution was to go to about:config and change some parameters to ones that would make the thing not appear at all (rather than remove it entirely), but if you know how to have it gone not only visually, but also formally, I'm obviously fine with this solution too.

Hi, you are using an old version of Firefox, which can compromise your security. To update it to 41.0.1, open the 3-bar menu > Help (question mark at bottom right) > About Firefox.

After doing that, here is some further information for reference: You can change the number of tiles on the New Tab page by zooming in or out (Ctrl and + key, or Ctrl and - key).

You may also want to keep the same zoom setting when clicking on a new tab: Type about:config into the address bar, press Enter, accept the warning, scroll down to browser.newtab.preload and double click on it to change 'Value' from True to False.

It is also possible in about:config to change the maximum number of tiles, by scrolling down to browser.newtabpage.columns (or .rows), then right click > Modify, to set a new number in 'Value.' More - Configuration Editor for Firefox.

However, since you want to remove the search box from the New Tab page, I suggest you try the add-on New Tab Tools.

If your question is resolved by this or another answer, please take a minute to let us know. Thank you.

Do you still want to have the about:newtab page or do you want to have an empty page (about:blank)?

The browser.newtab.url pref is no longer supported in Firefox 41 and later, so you can no longer use this to set the new tab page.

You can look at this extension to set the new tab page:

You can set the new tab URL setting via the Options/Preferences of the extension on the about:addons page.

Look at this extension to use the home page:

Classic Theme Restorer includes this feature as well. In CTR version 1.3.9 you can find the "New tab page url" in the Tabs (1) window.

You can use these special pages for the new tab page or use the URL of a web page. the default new tab page with the tiles is about:newtab

  • the default home page is about:home
  • for a blank page you can use about:blank
  • for Super Start you can use about:superstart

Thank you both for your very quick responses, I'll bookmark this page in case I want to tweak my FireFox some more - but for now I'm very satisfied with Scribe's solution.

Thanks again.
