That file has to be named exactly userContent.css in order that Firefox uses it! One capital letter as shown and the rest lowercase.

The customization files userChrome.css (user interface) and userContent.css (websites) are located in the chrome folder in the Firefox profile folder.
You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:
- Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
- Create the chrome folder (lowercase) in the <xxxxxxxx>.default profile folder if this folder doesn't exist
- Use a plain text editor like Notepad to create a (new) userContent.css file in the chrome folder (file name is case sensitive)
- Paste the code in the userContent.css file in the editor window
- Make sure that you select "All files" and not "Text files" when you save the file via "Save file as" in the text editor as userContent.css.
Otherwise Windows may add a hidden .txt file extension and you end up with a not working userContent.css.txt file - http://kb.mozillazine.org/Editing_configuration/Troubleshooting

I have it back again on my windows 7
browser.aboutHomeSnippets.updateUrl is empty
There is no chrome folder to put the userContent.css in
FF 36. Just updated from FF 33 and it had no chrome either. It did when I sorted this before
And how to stop the default page autocompleteing search terms?
if these cannot be fixed then firefox is going off my pc. When mozilla pay for my computer and broadband they can tell me how to use it

You need to create the chrome folder and the userContent.css file in it if you want to hide all snippets. If you set browser.aboutHomeSnippets.updateUrl to an empty string then this only prevents Firefox from loading new snippets from internet, but you still get a few built-in default snippets.
/* about:home */ @-moz-document url(about:home){ #snippetContainer { display:none !important; } }
Add code to the userContent.css file.

Otherwise Windows may add a hidden .txt file extension and you end up with a not working userContent.css.txt file
@cor-el. Thanks. That worked. Do you know how to turn off auto comlete on searches
Changed from FF home page. If FF want me back they can tell me how to disable auto complete search
That are suggestions just like you get on Google pages and with the search bar on the Navigation Toolbar.
You can disable those suggestions in Options/Preferences > Search
- [] Provide search suggestions
