Using aol.com, going to mail, Firefox tells me that I'm using an older version than 19, but I installed 19 last week. What's going on?

I use Firefox to log on to AOL.com. Next, I click on the "mail" icon and get a window for logging on to my mail account. That window contains an image of the Firefox logo and a statement that reads to the effect of, "It looks like you're not using the latest version of Firefox." and another statement requests that I click on it to load Firefox version 19. But, when I go up to the Firefox menu and "About Firefox," I get a dialog box that says it IS version 19. How is it that your software thinks I'm using an older version than 19 when I am actually using version 19 already? I had downloaded vesion 19 as soon as I saw it was available, although I could not do it then from the link button in the announcement (the link was dead), went to Mozilla and downloaded 19 from there.

ahhaaa. I thought I was being so thorough. I bet there are others out there who made the same blunder as me with this issue. I went over all the steps for the umpteenth time to get firefox to save version 19 on my pc. This time when trying to reload I found a link that took me to a page about system requirements. For some reason I thought I knew the system requirements. NOT ! Here is the info that gives me closure to this issue . . .

Please note that while the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows Vista and Windows 7 can be used to run Firefox 19, only 32-bit builds of Firefox 19 are supported at this time.

I think this answers the question for me. I guess until firefox says different that I will try firefox 18 (If there is such an animal).

Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache. In order to try to fix these problems, the first step is to clear both cookies and the cache. Note: This will temporarily log you out of all sites you're logged in to. To clear cache and cookies do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > History > Clear recent history or (if no Firefox button is shown) go to Tools > Clear recent history.
  2. Under "Time range to clear", select "Everything".
  3. Now, click the arrow next to Details to toggle the Details list active.
  4. From the details list, check Cache and Cookies and uncheck everything else.
  5. Now click the Clear now button.

Further information can be found in the Clear your cache, history and other personal information in Firefox article.

This may be caused by failing browser sniffing code that checks the Firefox in the user agent.

Try to override the user agent for that domain to make it see a Firefox 18 version.

You can open the about:config and create a new String pref via the right-click context menu

I followed directions (went to "Tools" and so on) then closed Firefox. When I reopened it I got the same message (see image below). I did not restart my Mac, if that should have been necessary.

Regarding the suggestion that I override the browser's sniffing code by going to about:donfig, I haven't a clue how to do that or where to find it on a Macintosh. To reiterete the issue, I do NOT have version 18 on my Mac; it IS version 19 I've already loaded AND installed, but I'm being told that I do not have 19 and should upgrade. See the image below for what I'm getting.

I'm not able to get that error message if I click the Sign in link on the aol.com home page with a modified user agent.

Reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.

  • Press and hold Shift and left-click the Reload button.
  • Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
  • Press "Command + Shift + R" (MAC)

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.
