I am using google search engine, and I find what I am looking for. Then the search engine or browser adds an icon on that page for me. I do not want this. How do I switch off this setting?
I click on the website page and scan through things then close that website. Then I get on the search engine page an icon of that website I just looked through added onto the search page as an icon. I do not want this. I know how to add websites I frequently visit so its not that. It must be a setting somewhere in my Firefox settings. How do I switch this off?

You use a Firefox home page with Google ??
Settings > Home and Startup > Firefox home > Recent activity . . . that may help
Yes I have open my Firefox where all the websites sit on that page. I am searching through Google. I tried your remedy and that didn't work as I had already switched that off. However I did switch off shortcuts in the Firefox home area and it worked. So thanks. Its my first time using Firefox.

Yes, disabling shortcuts completely is one of the options. Another option is to fill all available spots with pinned shortcuts; this will prevent new ones from appearing. For more details, see Customize items on your Firefox New Tab page.
