thunderbird search is no longer finding everything
I have used thunderbird for many years and was always very pleased with how easy it is to search for old emails, using just about anything--an email address, a word in the subject line, or anywhere else. Lately, it no longer finds all the message for a simple thing, like an email address. Has something changed?
Also it seems that copies of my emails are not necessarily kept locally in that it often says it has to download my messages off the server, which can take a bit of time. In the past it has only downloaded new messages, but now it seems to download everything.
All this leave me with the sinking feeling that my whole online record could disappear at any minute. Any ideas?

There are multiple ways to search in Thunderbird:
- Global Search https://support.mozilla.org/kb/global-search
- Folder Search https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1514912#answer-1738471
- Quick Search https://support.mozilla.org/kb/quick-filter-toolbar
Which one are you talking about?

Assuming this is an IMAP account - check your Account Settings. At the top right of the Thunderbird window, click the menu button ≡ > Account Settings > Synchronization & Storage > Disk Space Also check the settings for Message Synchronization. https://support.mozilla.org/kb/imap-synchronization

Make sure to create a backup of your Thunderbird profile on a regular basis. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data#w_backing-up-a-profile
