A message that Thunderbird is not responding frequently means you have an Anti-Virus which is scanning every file that gets opened. So if you click on an email to read it, that means Thunderbird is accessing a file to locate email. The Anti-Virus may then interrupt the process to scan the opened file, so Thunderbird cannot use it hence the not responding message.

Access Anti-Virus and make an exception to not scan your Thunderbird profile. If you got your Thunderbird install from the official website:

then it's likely the Thunderbird folder that needs being make exempt from scanning is here because that would be the default location for storing everything to do with your profile.

  • C:Users/username/Appdata/Roaming/Thunderbird

After stopping the AV from scanning things....I would also carry out the following checks:

1. See if folder needs repairing so the index matches the actual emails in mbox file.

  • Right click on Inbox folder and select 'Properties'
  • Click on 'Repair Folder'
  • click on 'OK'

Compacting is a method of maintaining a healthy file - basic good housekeeping More info here:

2.. Right click on inbox and select 'Compact. This will clean up the Inbox removing all old previously deleted or moved emails.

3. Your global database may be out of date and need rebuilding. Follow instructions at this link: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/rebuilding-global-database
