For some reason my Bookmark Tool Bar no longer displays anything. It is a blank strip across the top of the screen. However all of my bookmarks can be displayed on the right or left side of the screen in a vertical format. I can not find a way to repopulate the original Bookmark Tool Bar and find the current display very awkward give the number of bookmarks I have on file. Is this a result of an intentional upgrade or software failure?

If you have sync, and there is a problem anywhere, Shut Down Sync Immediately On All Devices to prevent the problem from spreading. Type https://accounts.firefox.com/settings<enter> in the address box. Once the problem is fixed, perform the same repair on all computers/profiles before using sync again.

[v57+] Places Maintenance is built into Firefox.

Type about:support<enter> in the address box.

You will find Places Database near the bottom. Press the Verify Integrity button.

If any errors are reported: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/fix-bookmarks-and-history-will-not-be-functional

The places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite files contains your History and Bookmarks. And it looks like they are corrupted.

Type about:support<enter> in the address box.

Under the page logo on the left side, you will see Application Basics. Under this find Profile Folder. To its right press the button Show Folder. This will open your file browser to the current Firefox profile. Now Close Firefox.

Locate the above files. Then rename or delete them. Restart Firefox. The browser should then create a new place.sqlite and recover your bookmarks from the backup files.

Note: Your history is not backed up and will be lost.

Where is the address box that I type in about:support? I do not see it on the account.firefox.com/setting page. This may be above my pay scale. I tried The Geek Squad but they only work on product under warranty.

The address box is on the top toolbar line. It shows what website/about page you are on.

I got as far as finding (places.database.lastMaintenance) file but do not find a verification button.

So, you do see bookmarks in the Bookmarks Toolbar folder in the sidebar (Ctrl+B) and in the Bookmarks Manager (Library; Ctrl+Shift+O) ?

Make sure toolbars like the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible. Open the Customize page and set what toolbars (Show/Hide Toolbars) and toolbar items to display.

  • Right-click empty toolbar area -> Customize
  • "3-bar" menu button -> Customize
  • View -> Toolbars
    *you can tap the Alt key or press the F10 key to show the hidden Menu Bar temporarily
  • check that "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • if "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the Customize palette to the Customize page to the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • if missing items are in the Customize palette then drag them back from the Customize page to the toolbar
  • if you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the Customize palette then click Restore Defaults in the Customize palette window to restore the default toolbar set.

Not sure how or why but I hit the 3 bar menu then tapped Bookmarks and then Show Bookmarks and it was displayed as it used to be.

Thanks for the help but it turned out to be simpler than expected.

You still not see bookmarks on the Bookmarks Toolbar as Manage Bookmarks opens the Library ?

Did you check the steps in my above reply and confirm the the "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" control is still positioned on the Bookmarks Toolbar ?
