I like the new Tab system on Thunderbird, except I don't want to have to open each email in a tab to see the content. Can I get the old split screen format back? Also, in the tab view, is it possible to scroll to the next or previous email--other than deleting the message, which does indeed bring up the next one.

If you do not like the layout look at the options under the View menu.

Pressing F8 will toggle the message pane on and off.

Right click the mail toolbar and see if there are any Next buttons that work for you.
