I have just re-installed Debian 6 and Icedove. I copied the profile from my previous installation and updated profiles.ini which has always worked in the past.
I am now asked to create a new account. Once I get round the default imap problem and use pop3 I am unable to open Icedove. I get an error message that Thunderbird is already running and I need to close it or reboot. I can't close it because it isn't running. pstree and top do not show it so there is no pid to kill. Rebooting gets me back to creating a new account and the same problem.
I have never had any problem in the past. Copying the old profile to .icedove and changing profiles.ini has always given me my address list and my old emails. Import says it has imported mail and address book but it hasn't.
I like Thunderbird and would be reluctant to dump it. I don't like Evolution but I may have to use it and try to re-create my address book. What a waste of time!

Did you copy a lock file?

I have not been able to find a lock file. However I deleted profiles.ini and copied it from the backup and that seems to work. Presumably the lock was hidden somewhere in the .default file.
