Thunderbird 52.8.0 for Mac High Sierra Hangs after 30-60 minutes of working fine

I have a new computer with SSD and a totally clean install of everything. Thunderbird seems to work fine for about 30 minutes to an hour and then it just gives me the beachball hanging. I have to force quit and restart TB several times a day. This has been happening consistently and I've turned off all add-ons. But TB is useless to me if I can't run the Google integration add ons. I've repaired, compacted, etc. I can't believe a profile would get corrupted this fast (the computer is <6 months old). Anyone else experience this or any solutions to recommend?
