I click on Thunderbird in the dock on my iMac. The application starts but nothing more happens. I have to do a Force Quit to kill it. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Thunderbird but the result is the same.

What happens if you start Thunderbird in safe mode?

 see https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/safe-mode-thunderbird

Sorry for the delay, Wayne. Pressing the option key during startup has the same outcome. I'm guessing it never gets to safe mode. In any case it appears to be waiting for something that will never happen.

Thanks for the suggestion. Yes there was a .parentlock file in the profile. I got rid of it but the problem persists.

I tried your suggestion (OSX in safe mode) but still no Thunderbird window. Something about the blank screen with "Thunderbird" at the top prompted me to press the Esc key. After pressing it the second time a frameless window appeared with Thunderbird content. Rather than struggle with it in safe mode I shut it down and powered up normally. Starting Thunderbird still produced no window but 2 or 3 clicks on the Esc key got me a normal looking Thunderbird window. So far, so good. But really weird. Thanks for your help.
