I have orange emails in desktop file named "inbox" but no Orange program to open them so how can I access them

Orange closed my freeserve email account on 31 May 2017. I need to keep the emails for reference. I first renamed the inbox files "emails up to 31 May 2017". I then closed the orangehome account and found that the new file had gone as well . Searching the computer I found the file of 535,426kb which I believe to be the missing emails. The file is named "inbox". I have no program that recognizes this file. Any suggestions please?

Use a text editor - or Thunderbird.

I have tried this but neither recognizes the file. Thanks anyway

Thunderbird mail files are text files, so they certainly can be opened with a text editor. Since you haven't explained what you did I'm not going to guess.

Beyond that, what are you trying to achieve in the first place?

My intention is to make the emails available in gmail. The most a text editor has achieved is to open the first few emails from the file in an expanded form. It would take hours to reach the end of the file. Really the results need to be in standard email format to be of practical use. Unfortunately I cannot reinstall the orangehome program to open such a large number of emails. If I could use the results from the text editor and convert them to a mail in gmail I expect that is the best I will achieve. Thanks again

My intention is to make the emails available in gmail.

You'll need a Gmail IMAP account for this.

Install this add-on: https://addons.mozilla.org/thunderbird/addon/importexporttools/

Then import the mail file into your Thunderbird 'Local Folders' account.

Finally upload the messages to the Gmail server.

Hello Chris

It appears that Mozilla Thunderbird no longer supports the add on you have suggested , I got a "missing something" message when I tried several times to install it. Have I lost my emails forever? I have appreciated your help

ImportExportTools works with Thunderbird. Check this article for generic installation instructions. https://support.mozilla.org/kb/installing-addon-thunderbird

Given you are still within the window offered by orange I suggest you follow their instruction on importing your mail into gmail. You only have about a week to do it. Those instructions do not include any file you downloaded to your desktop.

With regard to that file I assume it is probably an MBOX file although I see nothing to support this other than your vague statement you see the first few email in an expanded format. If that is the case the import export tools add-on will import them to Thunderbird.

Click on the three bars on the right of the Thunderbird toolbar (Not the one in Firefox) select addons.

type ImportExportTools (or as much as it required for the search to find it) into the search box in the add on manager and press enter. click the install button against the add-on when it is listed.
