Address book not accepting new contacts nor showing all existing contacts

I am unable to enter a new contact into my address book. When I fill 'new contact info. block' & and press close. Then subequently close address book and re-open I find the new contact has not been added.

I also note that my total number of contacts is listed as 79 whereas I can only see 30 odd in the address book files? Has anyone any idea as to what is going on?
