How do I get the hyperlinks in my emails to open in firefox?

I'm using the email programme on my macbook pro and until a few days ago I was able to click on links in the emails and they would open automatically in firefox. Now they open firefox but not the link itself. I've tried resetting firefox but no change. It works fine when I set safari as my default browser.
