I spent way too long trying to figure out how to get Tbird to send messages via my GMail account with two factor authentication. This was a fresh installation of Thunderbird after I installed a new hard drive on my PC.

Until I fixed my problem, I kept getting this message when trying to send: Sending of the message failed. The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp.google.com timed out. Try again.

I'm embarrassed to say that the problem was that I had been using smtp.google.com when I need to use smtp.gmail.com.

Maybe it will help others trying to configure Tbird for Gmail with 2FA if I post exactly what is now working for me in Tbird v 78.12.0. Here are all the settings:

FOR POP3 CONNECTION: 

 Server Name: pop.gmail.com
 Port:  995  
 User Name:  myacct@gmail.com
 Connection security:  SSL/TLS
 Authentication method:  Normal password
 Type of password used:  an application password generated in my Google account.

FOR SMTP CONNECTION: 

 Server Name:  smtp.gmail.com
 Port:  465
 User name:  myacct@gmail.com
 Authentication method:  Normal password
 Connection Security:  SSL/TLS
 Type of password used:  an application password generated in my Google account.

I don't know if it was necessary or not, but I used a separate app password for POP3 and and another for SMTP I did this by clearing out the passwords stored under Tools > Options > Privacy & Security > Passwords. Then I first tried SMTP, entered one app p/w for that, then tried POP3, and entered another app p/w for that. (Tbird doesn't appear to allow me to use separate passwords otherwise.)

If you apply OAuth2 authentication to all servers, which is the recommended setup, 2FA and 'less-secure apps' settings do not affect access to the account in TB. App passwords are only needed for apps that don't support OAuth2.
