Firefox automatically rolls back to 52.6 after upgrading 57.0 to 58.0

I'm getting some strange behavior after upgrading Firefox from 57.0 to the most stable release, 58.0. Immediately after installing the new version, the icon in my taskbar (I'm running Windows 10 Enterprise) will revert back to the pre-57.0 design. If I close my browser completely and start it back up, the UI and features will have rolled back to the 52.6 version, without any indication as to why. I've tried just uninstalling Firefox and reinstalling it, but to no avail. Any ideas what might be happening?

The desktop Firefox itself (for Windows, Mac OSX, and Linux) does not have the ability to rollback to a earlier Release or to a version on a separate update channel such as ESR. Either you have something that is reverting your system to a earlier state or you have both 58.0.1 and 52.6.0esr installed on Windows 10.

It was indeed another program rolling back Firefox. I was eventually able to narrow it down to EMET. After creating an exception for Firefox in EMET, Firefox was no longer rolled back.

Hello,

The Refresh feature (called "Reset" in older Firefox versions) can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your bookmarks, history, passwords, cookies, and other essential information.

Note: When you use this feature, you will lose any extensions, toolbar customizations, and some preferences. See the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article for more information.

To Refresh Firefox:

  1. Open the Troubleshooting Information page using one of these methods:
    • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click help Help-29 and select Troubleshooting Information. A new tab containing your troubleshooting information should open.
    • If you're unable to access the Help menu, type about:support in your address bar to bring up the Troubleshooting Information page.
  2. At the top right corner of the page, you should see a button that says "Refresh Firefox" ("Reset Firefox" in older Firefox versions). Click on it.
  3. Firefox will close. After the refresh process is completed, Firefox will show a window with the information that is imported.
  4. Click Finish and Firefox will reopen.

If you go from a release Firefox version to an ESR version then you would have to switch the update channel and this is only possible by installing the full ESR Firefox version. So it sounds that you have some software that protects the Firefox application and restores the previous version.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support to see if that has effect in case security software is causing problems.

Uninstalling Firefox and then going into the AppData folder and deleting all Mozilla folders, and then reinstalling 58.0 seems to have worked. The program is no longer rolling back to a previous version.

UPDATE: This did not work. See my second response below. Turns out another program on my system was causing Firefox to be rolled back.
