What is occurring when an IMAP Mail Server setting is set to Clean up ("Expunge") Inbox on Exit?

Before I check this option I want to make sure what is happening. I would like to leave messages in the inbox until I either move them to an online folder, local folder, or delete them. There are times I will close Thunderbird or exit an email account before I have gone through all of the email in the inbox.
