Where did you download from, can you check your download history?

The current version 32.0 is available here: https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/

In case you are infected with a bad extension that is generating bogus notifications, could you check your Add-ons page. Either:

  • Command+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable.

Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

Does that stop the download nags?

If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then best is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.

Download a new copy of the Firefox application and save the disk image file to the desktop

Your personal data is stored elsewhere in the Firefox profile folder, so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data when you uninstall and (re)install Firefox.

I did see a dozen or so add-ons (most of which were the same, Mackeeper I think) and deleted them. What I realize now is that when I click in a response field (to type) that's when a new tab is created for many different advertisements, including the one that seems to be from Firefox says the following…

"Recommended. You are currently browsing the web with Firefox and it is recommended that you update your video player to the fastest version available. Please update to continue".

I have Firefox version 32 and it was downloaded directly from the Mozilla site. Now what?

I think you are being targeted to install malware for Windows, or maybe this is something new for Mac.

When you get that "update" page in a new tab, an you read the address in the address bar? That might help identify the source of the problem. Or if you right-click a blank area of the page and use View Page Info, you might be able to find the address there.
