Since I upgraded from FF128-esr to FF140-esr I always get the "Firefox is being updated by another instance" This is really driving me crazy, as I checked / did / .... everything (and even more) I found on the internet related to that.

Nothing helps !

Creating and using a new default profile didn't help

Finally I ended up uninstalling FF completely (making sure no -zero- leftovers remained in ProgramFiles, AppData a.s.o.), and reinstalled FF140.7.0-esr freshly. After installation I started FF immediately with the created default profile (only existing one) --> SAME THING : "Firefox is being updated by another instance"

And this is really a FF140 thing, when I go back to FF128, on the same computer, same profiles, ...., the problem is gone.

I would like to know in detail what checks are really done by FF to decide to give that "Firefox is being updated by another instance"

Are there really NO Firefox-developers in this "Community Forum" able and willing to (answer and) help solving above topic cq issue ?

Thank you

There is a problem with the URL of this site, instead of https://support.mozilla.org it should be https://NO-support.mozilla.org

Maybe it is the Mozilla Maintenance Service that provides updates in the background. Did you uninstall this service as well?

I understand from the link that the Mozilla Maintenance Service is used for FF and TB. Actually I m running FF 140.8.0esr and TB 140.8.1esr. With TB 140.8.1esr there is no problem at all. And ... for both FF and TB the "Check for updates but let you choose to install them" is selected, so no background updating at all.

Are both Firefox and Thunderbird running when you get this?

No difference. Normally both are running.

But I tested it : - stopped TB - stopped FF - launched FF

--> same issue.

As said in the OP, with FF 128 there are no problems at all

Anything in task manager when you try to run Firefox?

@jonzn4SUSE

When Firefox is not running, there is in the TaskManager (SystemExplorer) nothing running related to Firefox and Mozilla.

Thats one of the reasons I asked in the OP : I would like to know in detail what checks are really done by FF to decide to give that "Firefox is being updated by another instance"

I would try it again and look at process-explorer and focus of the name of the company for each process. It could be something with no name.

Make sure you see all processes for all users in the Windows Task Manager.
