Firefox crashing on start but no crash report when using about:crashes in troubleshooting mode

Windows Event viewer shows Firefox has crashed but Firefox does not show it. Attempting to troubleshoot the problem. This started 2/8/2022. After reinstalling Firefox the event viewer is no longer reporting crashes so the event viewer reports I am including are from yesterday before anything was done. Tried doing a refresh, clearing cash and history and temp files, uninstalling Firefox and reinstall a fresh copy. Tried all of the troubleshooting instructions I could find on the site. In normal mode I cannot open any pages including the Firefox settings, Add-on or any other pages except Help, About and troubleshooting pages. All I get no matter what I put in the URL field is a blank page. No Error or message of any kind.

Windows Event viewer shows Firefox has crashed but Firefox does not show it. Attempting to troubleshoot the problem. This started 2/8/2022. After reinstalling Firefox the event viewer is no longer reporting crashes so the event viewer reports I am including are from yesterday before anything was done. Tried doing a refresh, clearing cash and history and temp files, uninstalling Firefox and reinstall a fresh copy. Tried all of the troubleshooting instructions I could find on the site. In normal mode I cannot open any pages including the Firefox settings, Add-on or any other pages except Help, About and troubleshooting pages. All I get no matter what I put in the URL field is a blank page. No Error or message of any kind. Tried all of the troubleshooting instructions I could find on the site. In normal mode I cannot open any pages including the Firefox settings, Add-on or any other pages except Help, About and troubleshooting pages. All I get no matter what I put in the URL field is a blank page. No Error or message of any kind.

Hi Jeff, sorry to hear about this problem. You mentioned normal mode, does that mean if you restart Firefox in Troubleshoot (Safe) Mode, it works normally? That can indicate a problem with one of the things that is disabled in that mode, particularly:

  • incompatibility with graphics card driver software (hardware acceleration)
  • add-ons
  • JavaScript compilers

Oh wait, I just saw "Webroot SecureAnywhere"

There is a known issue with 64-bit Firefox 97, Webroot SecureAnywhere, and a recent Windows 10-11 update: Firefox is barely functional, if at all, due to a conflict.

People are working with Webroot to issue an update.

Until then, a user posted that one workaround is to run Firefox 97 in backwards compatibility mode. I haven't tested this myself, but here is how you would set that up:

(1) Open the Properties dialog for your Firefox shortcut. Either:

  • right-click a Desktop shortcut, then click Properties
  • right-click a pinned Taskbar icon, then right-click the Firefox (or Mozilla Firefox) item, then click Properties

(2) Switch to the Compatibility tab

(3) Check the box for "Run this program in compatibility mode for"

(4) If the selector for that option is not set on Windows 8, switch it to Windows 8

As a result of this change, you may notice that some Windows 10-specific features and styling are disabled. However, I am not aware of any major changes. If you experiment with this, let us know your experience.
