on one of my computers is Thunderbird which has never been updated. It is the version 45.8.0. Can I update this with the newest version of thunderbird just offered maintaining all data?

Backup your profile. https://support.mozilla.org/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data#w_backing-up-a-profile

Then install and run the following version for your OS and language which you will find at http://archive.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/ 52.9.1 for example https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/52.9.1/win32/en-US/

Then do Help > About until you get to version 78.9.1.
