Local Folder Problems

So I think I have made a right mess... My husband had a problem with his TB - it wouldnt open PDF files attached to emails. We tried closing TB down and re-opening and it didnt work. Eventually I had the 'bright' idea of re-downloading TB, as with most apps it will just fix any issues if you already have the program downloaded. BIG MISTAKE! It wiped out all his accounts - I have spent the day setting up his email accounts for him. So far so good. BUT it turns out that he has this strange way of dealing with his emails. Once he has actioned them they get put into a folder that he has created (I think a local folder). I have managed to retrieve his emails on the server - and even some of the emails that he put in folders under archive... But I cannot find a way of getting back the emails he put under the Local Folder section. To make matters worse - his computer has not been making restore points (I have sorted that now) and I cant restore it to a previous time when TB worked. The good news is that the pdf's now work. But is there a way to find these missing folders? Some of them are really important. I assume that they are stored somewhere on his laptop (hence local folders) so presumably they are 'data' and therefore not wiped out - or am I totally wrong about this?

Forget restore points - they don't really protect user data. Make sure you are using the "real" default profile. Start Thunderbird on command line with

  thunderbird.exe -P --allow-downgrade
