My emails disappear from my inbox and I cannot find them again. Help me!!!!!

I receive all of the emails --- I delete some I do not want and they end up in trash and I can find them there and reinstate them if I wish. HOWEVER--after I have read some of them they do not return to the inbox and they do not go into trash and they do not go to the computer's recycle bin. They just disappear. Some do go back to the inbox so that I can read them again. This has been going on for several months and I am sick of it. 

             I don't know if I clicked on some button somewhere to cause this or what.  I do not understand all of the technical stuff.
   I just don't want my emails to disappear.
