My home page is google.co.uk Every time I use google search engine, the page stay white and a small file named "search" appear and ask to be saved. Then I cancel this suspicious file and try to reload the page but when it is done the central search bar disapeared and i can see just just a part of the google logo. I got this problem for two month now. Same stuff every time I try to reload and sometime I got absolutely nothing on the page and sometime my internet connection is stuck. Then I need to close all pages and wait before the page return to normal. In one day In can be asked around ten time or more to save this suspicious "search" file.

Thank you very much for your time and help.

Regards.

Google search actually is a complex application that retrieves a lot of files in the background. "search" may be one of those components that should be integrated seamlessly into the page but for some mysterious reason is being converted into a download.

It's possible that an add-on or a security filter or a proxy is responsible. To test the add-on angle, a standard diagnostic is to try Firefox's Safe Mode.

First, I recommend backing up your Firefox settings in case something goes wrong. See Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles. (You can copy your entire Firefox profile folder somewhere outside of the Mozilla folder.)

Next, restart Firefox in Firefox's Safe Mode (Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode) using

Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

In the dialog, click "Start in Safe Mode."

Does this make any difference? Not sure how long you have to use Google to decide whether it is helping...

You might already have tried this, but just in case... When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

(1) Bypass Firefox's Cache

Use Ctrl+Shift+r to reload the page fresh from the server.

Alternately, you also can clear Firefox's cache completely using:

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced

On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now"

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site:

  • right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • Alt+t (open the classic Tools menu) > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"

Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

That ad for Chrome does not appear on the page if you disable javascript for Google. I use YesScript, and disabling javascript for a particular site is very easy.

Reset the page zoom on pages that cause problems.

  • View > Zoom > Reset (Ctrl+0 (zero); Cmd+0 on Mac)

Reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.

  • Press and hold Shift and left-click the Reload button.
  • Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
  • Press "Command + Shift + R" (MAC)

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

I'm also having the same issue. I have tried refreshing, resetting zoom and restarting in safe mode but no joy. The screenshot attached is my FF in safe mode. Any ideas?

Hi ChainsawDR, thank you for the screen shot.

Did you try clearing your cache and deleting your Google cookies as well? Because Google updates frequently, there can be a clash of style sheets or scripts, and this is why it is recommended to clear the cache to ensure you are using only the latest.

I've seen a few reports on Google's forums of the search box disappearing or being reduced to a single vertical point, but I haven't seen a good explanation for it.

If you just start typing, does text appear where you would expect the search box to be? If you type a query and press Enter, does Google search, even though your query is not displayed?

You can also try to reset the page zoom on that page.

  • View > Zoom > Reset (Ctrl+0 (zero); Cmd+0 on Mac)
