Strange behavior when loading pages with v13.0

Since updating to v13.0 I have been getting some strange behavior with sites that are already loaded. The problem applies to those sites I keep open permanently, the ones that load when I open Firefox. Basically, their thumbnail shows them as loaded but when I click on their tab the page appears white and the page loads again as though it had never been loaded previously.

If I switch to another tab the same thing happens. This never happened with v12.0 and previous versions.

Any ideas please?

I've noticed if this I restore the previous session. I do this only occasionally, but it sounds as though you have your startup option set to resume the previous session ("Show windows and tabs from last time"). Is that right?

Edit: Or do you have multiple home pages?

I have it set to restore the previous session. This is only 4 tabs and as I said previously, it's an issue that never happened before updating to v13.0.

Looks like an intentional change so that crash recovery would be less painful for users with a lot of tabs open: Bug 711193 – turn on "don't load tabs until selected" by default. There should be an option on the Tabs settings to turn this off, according to Bug 720154 – Checkbox for restore_on_demand should always be accessible. However, I'm on Firefox 12 on this laptop, so can't verify. Can you find it?

No, I have to say I can't find such an option.

Sorry, I guess the second bug said it's coming in Firefox 15. Hmmm, for now you'll have to do it manually using the about:config preferences page.

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the filter box, type or paste session and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click browser.sessionstore.restore_on_demand to flip its value from true to false. The line should turn bold.

I think that's all you need to do, and it should take effect on the next restore. Does it work? See below: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/929375#answer-341290

I have done it but I can't test it immediately because I have some sites open which have videos open and paused. I need to show these videos to my partner before I can close the browser. I will get back to you as soon as I can with the results.

@ cor-el Thanks however that option was already unchecked.

@ jscher2000 Your about:config workaround solved the issue. The pages concerned remain cached now. Thanks very much! :)

Just to be complete.
The "Don’t load tabs until selected" setting toggles the browser.sessionstore.restore_on_demand pref, so you shouldn't have to do that on the about:config page.
There is also a corresponding browser.sessionstore.restore_pinned_tabs_on_demand pref for pinned tabs that isn't affected by the setting in Options/Preferences.
