I can't reach--not log in to--MIT's website with Quantum. This not an option. Any ideas? Else, sticking with 56. Not enthused by Chrome.

No version of Quantum so far will let me reach--just reach, not log into--MIT's website. No other websites, so far as I can tell, are affected. I cannot use Quantum if I cannot reach that site. Problem is unlikely to be the (Windows 7 Pro) firewall or the security software--has happened both with McAfee suite and Avast (free)--also running Malwarebytes in both setups.

Ideas appreciated. I'd rather update but if that means I can't work, then no dice. Frankly, somewhat disappointed in Firefox, which I have been using since it was Netscape.

What is the error screenshot saying?

certificate error a client certificate was invalid or not provided [see below]

This is a repeat, with Ffox 61, of same problem with Ffox 57. I tried all suggestions kindly suggested by, I believe, JScher (or JScher2000) without success. In this Quantum installation I did not first uninstall Ffox56. I can reach some bookmarks within the MIT site but not mit.edu--and yep, I need to be able to reach that page.

I also am told with 61 that DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials 2018.1.22 is a noncompatible addon and has been disabled. This is another reason I am sticking with 56, but this not-able-to-upgrade is frustrating. I can't afford to buy a Mac and switch to whatever is on there--Safari?

Thanks.

What security Software do you use ? There is security software like Avast/AVG, Kaspersky, BitDefender and ESET that intercept secure connections and send their own certificate. If you are running any of the above software please check their community forum for a work around to apply settings.

These pages are also for the errors you may have besides relating to the above.

DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials is available : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/duckduckgo-for-firefox/ Last updated : 5 days ago (28 Jun 2018) Version 2018.6.28

You do not need a mac to use Safari.

uninstall Firefox. Then Delete the Mozilla Firefox Folders in C:\Program Files , C:\Program Files(x86) & C:\ProgramData Then restart system. Then run Windows Disk Cleanup. (Note: This should be Pinned and run Weekly, If never done below expect 10's of gig's) Then run it again and click the button that says Cleanup System Files. Note: your Firefox Profile is saved. But you should make a back up before you do :

Reinstall with Current Release Firefox 61.0.0 with a Full Version Installer

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

I don't think this is an issue with your version of Firefox. I get the identical screen in both Firefox 61 and Firefox 52 ESR on https://web.mit.edu/

Normally Firefox will properly migrate personal certificates from 56 to 57 so I don't know what went wrong there. Did you ever try manually importing your personal certificate file?

jscher2000, thank you for answer. Unhappily the page to which you kindly sent link lists certificate requirements: "Before obtaining certificates, make sure you have the following:

   Your MIT ID number.
   Your Kerberos username and password.
An IS&T-recommended web browser installed on each computer for which you are getting certificates.
Note: You will be required to change your Kerberos password during certificate renewal if your existing password is older than one year."

I am a freelance editor; MIT has been a client since 2011. I do not have an MIT ID number or Kerberos username or PW and have never been asked for any of these. Only time I have had trouble is since Quantum (57). If certificate file is on MIT site, that's trouble; is there a duplicate somewhere on my computer? Thanks again.

I don't know what's going on with the MIT site. It seems normal with the following HTTP address, but not with an HTTPS address.

http://web.mit.edu/

I could use http://exactly once, then it was autochanged to https:// every time I tried. I had been able to get to pages within MIT's website, though not mit.edu; but I just checked and I can't get to some of those pages either with Ffox 61. I am grateful for your help and I like Ffox enough to keep trying as time allows, but this is maddening. And I absolutely cannot be unable to work for such a reason.

I can't imagine, either, why MIT would cast Quantum into the doghouse. Unfortunately I have no standing to approach MIT's Information Systems and Technology people. This problem occurred starting with Ffox 57, and when you have held everything else constant but the browser version, maybe correlation is indicating causation. Anyway, thanks again.

Could that be caused by the HTTPS Everywhere extension?

Maybe. I can't test just now but will. That would be a great solution. Many thanks.

Sorry, not enough coffee. Yes, the change to https:// could be HTTPS: Everywhere. Have disabled. Will try 61 again when I can--it may have been enabled before.
