how can I have the most recent message in a thread shown first and not last
Thunderbird (used in conjunction with Gmail - I believe the term is mail client) message threads commence with the oldest; how can I make Thunderbird messages commence with the latest message?

you can not sort threads newest to oldest..
You can use the gmail like conversations add-on to make the view "just like Gmail" but you can not affect the threading (I think gmail conversation view is what your asking about anyway. Not threading) https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/gmail-conversation-view/?src=ss
Thanks - I will give it a try. Sorry unsure of correct jargon / terms; Update: this add on still seems to retain Thunderbird default messages - i.e. in a series of message and replies, the oldest message appears at the top. What I want is the newest message or reply first.

re :What I want is the newest message or reply first.
In threads: Currently, you can not sort threads newest to oldest
Why? The first email is the start of the conversation, all responses are connected to the previous, not the other way around. So as you read the conversation you work downwards in the same way you would read a book.
Even if you right click on email and select to open in Conversation view. Although this separates the conversation from the clutter of other emails, it will still be listed in the order it was created.
The conversation addon also works this way.

How do I get around this?
Workaround: Right Click on the first email in thread and choose: 'open message in Conversation' This open in a new tab and will include all emails both received and sent by you in that conversation. It will appear just like the oiginal view with oldest on top. Then click on the thread icon to remove the 'threaded' view.
in my case the list is then sorted by Date with newest on top. So easily identifying the newest email. But if required you could clickon Date column header.
Additional: Note: If the new email in the thread is unread: View > Threads > Threads with unread This will produce a list of the received emails in the thread If you then remove the threaded view by clicking on the thread column header, it will list emails by Date in whatever order you desire. Unfortunately, this only works with an unread email, so once you have read that email you cannot easily do this again to locate the email in the conversation unless you use the Workaround previously described.

Thanks Toad-Hall - I will try your workaround.
