Firefox includes optional features enhanced by AI to help you work more efficiently. On desktop, you can review and block these features at any time in Firefox Settings, starting in Firefox version 148.

What AI features you can control

Artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI and ML for short) are broad terms that describe many different technologies. Some of these technologies, like autocorrect and autocomplete, have been around for decades. In recent years, a new category has emerged: generative ML and generative AI, which uses large-scale models to power chatbots like ChatGPT, image generators, and more.

The AI controls section does not include features that use traditional machine learning, such as systems that classify, rank, or personalize an experience. These types of technologies have been part of Firefox for many years. The AI controls section in Settings is designed to give users more choice over this newer category of AI-enhanced features, including tools that produce summaries, name suggestions, or other AI-driven outputs.

Included features

You can block the following features on the AI controls page:

  • Translations: When you browse the web in Firefox, we use generative AI to translate pages into your preferred language seamlessly. Learn more.
  • Alt text for PDF images: When you add an image to a PDF, we use generative ML to interpret the image and automatically suggest alt text, which makes the PDF accessible to more people. Learn more.
  • AI-enhanced tab groups: When you create a tab group, we use generative ML to understand the tab titles and suggest a name for the group. We use generative AI to understand what other tabs are open and suggest related tabs be added to the group. Both help you better organize your tabs. Learn more.
  • Key points in link previews: When you click and hold a link, we use generative AI to read the beginning of the page and create a few key points. This helps you better understand the contents of the page, to decide if the link is worth the click. Learn more.
  • AI chatbot in sidebar: Quickly access an AI chatbot like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Copilot from the Firefox sidebar. You can switch providers anytime or choose to remove the AI chatbot from the sidebar completely if you prefer not to use it. Learn more.

As Firefox makes new features powered by generative ML and AI available in Firefox, they will also be covered by AI controls on this page.

Block new and current AI features (single switch)

When you use the Block AI enhancements switch, you won’t see new or current AI features in Firefox. You also won’t see pop-ups promoting them.

  1. Go to Settings > AI controls.
  2. Turn on Block AI enhancements.

If you Block AI enhancements, but want to keep using individual features, you can. Update the dropdown for any feature you want to keep using, to either Available or Enabled. For AI chatbots you can also choose a provider. Future features will still be blocked by default as long as Block AI enhancements is switched on.

What the dropdown options mean:

  • Available: You’ll see the feature and can use it
  • Enabled: You’ve opted in to use the feature
  • Blocked: You won’t see and can’t use the feature. For on-device AI, any models already downloaded are removed

When you Block AI enhancements, this also affects extensions that use AI provided by Firefox. Learn more.

Note: Extensions can still use third-party AI services independently. Blocking AI enhancements in Firefox does not stop extensions from using external AI tools.

Block specific AI features

You can block specific AI features in Firefox if you don’t want to use them or see them. If you block an AI feature, its functionality is disabled, and you’ll no longer see entry points for that tool in Firefox. You also won’t receive notifications or prompts to use that feature again.

For example:

  • The AI chatbot won’t appear as a tool in the sidebar
  • You won’t get tab group suggestions

To block specific features:

  1. Go to Settings > AI controls.
  2. Find the AI features you don’t want to see or use and select Blocked from the drop-down menu.

What the dropdown options mean:

  • Available: You’ll see the feature and can use it
  • Enabled: You’ve opted in to use the feature
  • Blocked: You won’t see and can’t use the feature. For on-device AI, any models already downloaded are removed
Tip: You can change your mind about a feature anytime. Come back to the AI controls page and update the drop-down for a feature.

Other features and where to configure them

The AI controls do not include some Firefox features that rely on traditional machine learning, as well as features that are controlled by third parties. This includes the sites you can visit and the search engines you choose to use. You can learn more and manage these features using the settings and help articles linked below.
