hello, enter about:config into the firefox address bar (confirm the info message in case it shows up) & search for the preference named browser.newtabpage.blocked - right-click and reset that entry to the default value.

Changes made manually on the about:newtab page are stored in the browser.newtabpage.pinned (default = [null]) and browser.newtabpage.blocked prefs that you can check/modify on the about:config page.
