on clicking the browser for opening following message is being displayed 'Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system'. but even after restarting no difference. i don't know which process in the task manager needse closed to shut it down. tried removing firefox using ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS, but not getting removed. tried reinstalling after downloading but didn't improve. tried anti-virus checks on hard disk using avast and microsoft security essentials, didn't reveal anything. need help to make firefox work again.

You must properly close Firefox with Exit not with Close Window.

  1. Alt+F, X ( File > Exit) -- the "X" in upper right corner merely closes the Window, don't count on it to close Firefox
  2. Verify Firefox is actually closed through the Windows Task Manager: Ctrl+Alt+Del, then choose Start Task Manager then make sure you are looking at the Processes tab, if you see firefox.exe the close it by right click on the row, then end process tree

Looking at the Application tab instead of the the Processes Tab will not help you, you need to look at the Processes tab.

If the installation asks you if you want it to start Firefox for you refuse that, after the installation finishes., start Firefox in the normal manner, that way way you avoid the possibility of creating another profile and can creating confusion by invoking the wrong profile.

Thank you but it did not work. also firefox.exe process is not being shown in the task manager. firefox doesn't open even first time after a restart.

Thank you for the advice. i found that solution given in 'firefox is already running but not responding' targets my problem. I FOUND THAT PROFILE FOLDER IS 'READ ONLY'. I TRIED TO UNCHECK AND SAVE IT BUT WAS NOT HAPPENING. I FOUND THAT ALL THE PARENT FOLDERS UPTO 'DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS' ARE 'READ ONLY' AND THIS PROPERTY IS NOT GETTING CHANGED AND SAVED. what could e the problem and how do i get over it?

I have the same problem with both Firefox and Thunderbird. I don't know what happened but both quit at the same time. I was having other computer problems with email suddenly disappearing from Outlook Express suddenly and I was attempting to recover it using another program. I tried rebooting, Nothing, I tried removing and redownloading, nothing. I opened task manager, nothing under Firefox exe. I am getting ready to wipe the drive and start over because of browser page and search hijacking problems I cannot find a resolution for. I am at a loss as to what to do. I do have some email inThunderbird I would like to keep but it looks lost if I can't fix this problem. Finally I used Firefox for a long time but just started with Thunderbird a few days ago. I don't my wife likes it as well as Outlook Express. I would like Thunderbird if I can save email to other locations as backup. What do I try next????

I'm surprised that found the problem, and didn't take the steps to actually remove the read-only attributes from you files. The cause is from restoring from read-only devices (CD-ROM).

One way is mentioned in http://dmcritchie.mvps.org/excel/backup.htm#readonly

In a DOS Command Window of the directory enter: attrib -r -s -h -a *.*
to reset read-only, hidden, and archive bits in current directory or to reset only read-only files in the current directory and subdirectories just enter: attrib -r /s

I would certainly remove read-only and hidden attributes.

from http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/53074-45-unable-remove-read-attributes-folders-disks

Locate the files through My Computer or Windows Explorer.

Highlight the file or group of files | Right click the file or group of files | Properties | Uncheck the Read-only box found in Attributes | Click Apply | Click OK

Very confusing. Any way to simplify this? Getting tired of restarting my computer just to use Firefox. I've tried running Firefox in Safe Mode, disabling Java, AdBlocker... I did a clean install of the browser and all of my addons. lengthy process. And now I'm wasting my day again trying to find a solution to this problem. Like everyone else here I can't end the process in Task Manager. Cannot delete parent.lock once FF hangs... Hangs without fail when I try to view videos from nbc/msnbc.

To make this more complicated, I'm just discovering that the same thing happens with IE when I test the same website that hangs up FF (in this case: http://www.ktlkam1150.com/main.html). Cannot close it even using task manager.

Just restarted FF in safe mode. Same troublesome sites worked fine. Restarted FF in normal mode, disabled every plugin and enabled them one by one, checking the troublesome sites for each one. I also disabled object dock, advanced systemcare and iObit Malware fighter on my computer and re-enabled them one by one. The same sites worked fine. Go figure. Let's see what happens after I surf awhile.

Yup. After surfing the internet for a bit I went to the KTLK site out of curiosity and FF hung up on me again.
