When I do "save as " action for an image in the browser it opens dialogue window to save selected image. Unfortunately it displays files and folders in some random order, rather than my preferred order (sorted alphabetically by name, followed by sorting by type).

I can see no rhyme or reason to the way Firefox lists files and folders in the dialogue window, so every time I am saving an image I have to sort things by name and type before I can find what I want.

This is not permanent so I have to repeat this action every time I save an image.

How do I, please set application preferences? to make this setting permanent?

There is almost ten years old, same question: https://support.mozilla.org/mk/questions/1023596 How do I change the sort order of files viewed in Save As and keep the new sort order permanent?

and whilst the first part of the question is answered (I knew it anyway...) the second part and keep the new sort order permanent remains un-answered to this day

anybody, please?

Hi there,

This isn't really a Firefox specific question, the browser uses the file save widget the operating system provides. If you have issues with these, it may be a packaging issue, a distro or DE specific problem, or even an upstream bug. Could you share your DE, so we may narrow down the issue a bit?

Regards, Balázs

@Balazs Mesko Thanks for replying. I have assumed that it is Firefox related, because: a - Firefox is the only browser having this issue, other browsers (e.g Google Chrome) are behaving OK. b - other non/browser applications are also behaving OK.

I have no issues with "file save widget" apart from Firefox.

Apologies for my ignorance - not entirely sure what you mean by DE? but... assuming that you are talking about Desktop Environment? it is: Desktop: KDE Plasma v: 5.27.5 wm: kwin_x11 vt: 7 dm: SDDM Distro: MX-23.6_KDE_x64 Libretto Jan 12 2025 base: Debian GNU/Linux 12 (bookworm) as for Firefox it is 143.0.3 with updates coming through package manager

thanks Chris

Thanks, I meant desktop environment, yes. I'll spin up a VM tomorrow, and see if I can reproduce it. I'm using GNOME and it's working as expected here, but that does not help you.
