I delete all emails in 'trash' before closing Thunderbird. However next time I visit Thunderbird the trash is still there so I have to delete them again, is there a fault ?

You might check settings>general to see if you have 'clear cache' set. You can also click Tools>clear recent history. If that makes the messages disappear, then it's just cache.
