How do I make the letters bigger (as default) in Thunderbird 60.0 on W10?

more options

I have tried Tools-Options-Display-Advanced to increase the size of letters in Thunderbird. Font and size changes made in those do not work. I just want to make the letters bigger - in the Thunderbird display and the emails when opened. I would like bigger letters as a default preference. How do I do this, please?

That stuff is clearly not written for "ordinary" users. I can't risk doing things I don't understand, especially since I saw reference to "screwing other things up" in part of the thread. I will ask a friend who knows more than me. If he can't help, I'll use another browser/mail app Might I suggest it should be easier, rather than harder, to make that sort of change in newer, "better" releases of Thunderbird?
