My Outlook.com email, calendar, and Sky Drive work fine. The people page on Windows outlook.com is blank, no contacts, unable to open the options, no manage at the top, unable to open the drop down to go back to email or anything else. This just happened yesterday. I cleared my cookies and cache. Still blank. This only happens on Firefox. It opens fine on Explorer. Therefore Windows said it is a Firefox issue. I am not expert in these matters so please dumb it down for me. Laymans terms only, if possible. Thank you.

Does it seem that the page is taking time to load and ends up blank, or that Firefox is giving up very quickly? Keep an eye on the "x" at the right end of the address bar when loading or reloading (Ctrl+r) the page. For example, it takes 2-3 seconds for me to reload on a fast connection.

You also can reload the page bypassing any previously cached files by pressing Ctrl+Shift+r. For example, it takes 4-5 seconds for me to reload that way.

Does it make any difference if you change your zoom level? You can hold down the Ctrl key and tap the + and - keys to zoom a page larger or smaller. If you adjust the zoom a couple times does anything appear? If you reload, does anything appear?

You might want to try the site in Firefox's Safe Mode. That's a standard diagnostic tool to bypass interference by extensions, graphics card incompatibilities, and some custom settings.

You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using

Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

In the dialog, click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Reset)

Any difference?

Tried it all and nothing makes a difference. The Outlook.com is now taking almost a minute to load. People page is still blank. Do I keep Firefox in safe mode or how do I switch it back? Any other ideas on how I can use Firefox as my browser for email and contacts? I don't want to to use IE.

Hi crobbins, after you exit Firefox, the next time you start it will be back in normal mode.

Some slowness can be caused by the Flash Player plugin. In addition to being used for videos, it is used for menus and for saving tracking information in so-called "Super Cookies". To see whether that might be an issue, you can switch it from playing automatically on every site to asking for approval to run. I don't know whether Microsoft's mail site uses Flash, but often advertisements do, so this might help a bit.

Visit the Add-ons page using either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Plugins.

The Flash Player plugin is listed under the name Shockwave Flash.

When you visit a site that wants to use the plugin, you should see a notification icon in the address bar and one of the following: a link in a black rectangle in the page or an infobar sliding down between the toolbar area and the page.

But... as for why the People page is blank, I'm not sure.

To see whether the content is present but obscured by a style problem, try turning off styles on the page temporarily. I suggest using the View menu on the classic menu bar for this. If you do not normally display the full menu bar, first tap the Alt key to show it temporarily.

View menu > Page Style > No Style

Typically the page content will appear along the left size of the window instead of its usual position. Does anything show up?

This setting is retained within the tab until you switch it back using

View menu > Page Style > Basic Page Style

Thank you so much for trying to help me with this mystery. I do not see "page style" anywhere. On my outlook.com I can select the settings icon which gives me color options, reading pane (which I set to "off") or "more mail settings" but none of those options are "view" or "style". How do I accomplish your suggestion?

This is a Firefox issue only as I have no issues in IE. I have used Firefox for years with no issues. I sure hope you can help me fix this Firefox issue. I now have to refresh the outlook.com email page and wait for a minute or two for it to load, also. It is all messed up and I did not knowingly change or add anything. The people page is still blank.

Many thanks! Cathi

Hi crobbins, the View menu is on the Firefox menu bar, it's not part of the web page.

If you have the orange Firefox button in the upper left corner, tap the Alt key on your keyboard to display the Firefox menu bar temporarily just below it. Then you should be able to do the experiment:

View menu > Page Style > No Style

If you don't have either the orange Firefox button or the menu bar, you may have Firefox in full screen mode. Please press F11 to switch to normal mode so you can access the menu.

Obviously email should load much more quickly than 1-2 minutes. While you're waiting, could you keep an eye on the message in the lower left of the window that shows the site Firefox is waiting for? Perhaps the problem is with one of the advertisers or some other third party site that could be blocked/unblocked.

Thank you, I did find the view and tried the no style and back to basic style that but that did not change anything. I still have the same issues originally stated in the start of this email thread and now my outlook.com take several refreshes to get it to open. There must be a way to fix this in Firefox. I hope you can help. :)

crobbins, this very thing started happening to me yesterday.

Here's how to fix it if you are using NoSript:

When you go to the contacts page in Outlook, point at the little NoScript icon near the top left hand corner. In the drop-down menu select "Allow pfx.ms". Once you do that all your contacts will show up.

I hope this helps.

I do not use NoScript but have the same problem. The page does display when FF 27.0.1 is running in Safe mode. I disabled add-ons one by one and found the culprit is Wondershare Video Player 1.6.0 Browser extension. When that is disabled, Outlook opens the contacts page normally. Contacted Wondershare support and they admit they do NOT have a solution for this problem at this stage.
