can't download current upgrade on my new iMac 10.6.6--goes on forever and eventually shuts the computer down.

I have a new iMac 10.6.6 and when I transferred from my old computer I had to reinstall Firefox. About a week ago a popup window indicated a new upgrade ready for download. I clicked on 'install' and hours later it hadn't completed. I closed the download window. A second time, after a new popup, I clicked on 'install' and went to bed. I was waked up at 3 a.m. with the computer sending an alarm; download not complete. i would like to download the upgrade, but afraid to try again; can't afford more shut-downs and hours waiting. What could be the problem and what to do about it?
