I have had FF 15 16 17 on my Windows 7 IBM Thinkpad. And the screen is constantly flashing, sending tabs to new windows, double then single screens, You have to wait till all the show is done before you can type or select or do anything. This can go on for minutes.

and when you scroll everything stops. Saving saving anything i s a night mare of all kinds of side effects. After a while it will settle down somewhat but at first it dries you nuts. And you can't do anything

Sounds like malware. Do a scan for malware using these applications:

If these don't find it or can't clear it, post in one of these forums for specialized malware removal help:

BEen there done that. Its strictly between FF , Also Thunderbird and Win 7. NO other problems with anything. Shut down off those two and things are fine. I think its still a flash and Java problem.

Flash does not normally open new tabs or windows, and neither does Java. Something else has to be involved. Does this behaviour happen if you start in Firefox safe mode?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do not click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

You can check for problems caused by recent Flash updates and try these:

  • disable a possible RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin extension for Firefox and update the RealPlayer if installed
  • disable protected mode in Flash 11.3 and later
  • disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin
