how do I get rid of that wretched pocket thing that was shoved down my throat?

Go to about:config and change extensions.pocket.enabled to false.

Here's what I do. see screenshot Looks like updates are turning things on and changing data. I have set a few back to false or change the data again. Also give Waterfox a try.  ;-))
