You can copy certain files with Firefox closed to the current profile folder to transfer or recover personal data.

You can use the button on the "Help -> More Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page (Root directory).

  • bookmarks and history: places.sqlite
  • favicons: favicons.sqlite
  • bookmark backups: compressed .jsonlz4 JSON backups in the bookmarkbackups folder
  • cookies.sqlite for the Cookies
  • formhistory.sqlite for saved autocomplete Form Data
  • logins.json (encrypted logins;32+) and key4.db (decryption key;58+) for Passwords saved in the Password Manager
key3.db support ended in 73+; to use key3.db in 58-72, make sure to remove key4.db
  • cert9.db (58+) for (intermediate) certificates stored in the Certificate Manager
  • persdict.dat for words added to the spell checker dictionary
  • permissions.sqlite for Permissions and possibly content-prefs.sqlite for other website specific data (Site Preferences)
  • sessionstore.jsonlz4 for open tabs and pinned tabs (see also the sessionstore-backups folder)

Please explain the problem in detail. What happens? What is/are the exact error message(s) ?

Did you install beta (Firefox 96) and then reinstall Firefox 95? That may cause Firefox to say that it needs to create a new profile because it can't downgrade your Firefox 96 profile back to Firefox 95. Does that sound like what happened?

If so, your data should still be there and it's a question of which parts are downwards compatible (i.e., which files have the same format in Firefox 96 vs 95) and can be copied to your new profile folder. More on that if relevant, but if you want to skip ahead, check out this article: Recover important data from an old profile.

no it didn't resolve. I went were you suggested but the history wasn't there. I have a complete backup on another drive if you think that would help. of Firefox beta with the correct bookmarks

What files do you have and in what format? Different types of files can be restored, but have different ways of doing it.
