Thanks for your response. The first Mozilla KB article you link to mentions corrupted preferences file as a possible source of repeated crashes. I followed the instruction to move the .org.mozilla.firefox.plist out of the preferences folder and onto the desktop. I then opened Firefox and the crash still occurred. The KB article says that moving the .plist file out of the preferences folder should result in a brand new .plist file being created the next time I open Firefox. However, I noticed that a new .plist file didn't replace the one I moved out of the folder. Does that mean anything?

There may also be a problem with one of my mac's fonts. I'm investigating that issue as well, but would appreciate any further info about the .plist troubleshooting process I described above.

Is there any way for me to see the actual crash reports I'm sending to mozilla in case there's something in them that can point me in the direction of the problem?

@cor-el, was there something in the crash report you were able to see that led you to suggest I check for corrupted fonts? Or is it just that corrupted fonts are a common cause of app crashes?

With some help from apple's support forums, I was able to remove the corrupted font and Firefox seems to be working again. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
