I have just installed Firefox and it takes 30s from clicking the desktop icon to loading the home page. Tabs only take about 2s, is this right?

IE loads in 2-3 s.

Initial cold start is longer than IE. IE is built into the operating system and much of the application is loaded when you start the computer. With Firefox it needs to load from scratch when you first start it, which results in a longer time to initially start up. Mozilla have been looking into ways to improve startup time.

One of the things will be the startupCache folder in the Firefox Profile Folder. Other improvements are that more files are stored in .jar ZIP archives, so less files need to be loaded on start.

Security software that isn't configured properly for Firefox can also cause extra delays by first scanning all Firefox's files and Firefox opens a lot of them on each startup. If a second start isn't significantly faster then you should check security software.

The answers you have got above are correct.

However, if your FF otherwise feels snappy when browsing - and a second restart (aka. warm start) of FF is much faster than the first - then you could try my suggestions here: https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/762446#answer-119951

The slow load time on a cold start is an old "classic" problem for FF. Mozilla may work on a solution or not, but meanwhile I'm happy with this work around.
