Wehere is the settings to not select the next email and mark as read after deleting the currently opened email?
When I delete an email, thunderbird automatically select the next email and mark as read. How to turn off this setting?

Try the addon, 'deselect on delete tb78'. Let me know. :)
It is even worse. After deleting the current email, it goes to the next one, marks as read, and then deselects it.
This addon stopped working a few years ago already.
Which part do you object to, the selecting of the next message or marking it read? If the latter, the setting found at <Settings | General | Reading & Display | Automatically mark messages as read> should cover it. If the former, well, something has to be selected after the current message is deleted, right?
I am puzzled why the addon isn't working, as it works on my 140.10.
@ Lin: What would be dream setting as follow: you select an email and automatically mark it as read as default setting. Then when you deleted it, it does not go to the next email and mark it as read. Instead, after the deleting the current email, it just stay as it is without selecting anything. With the old gold addon 'deselect on delete tb78', it was the case for a while. Any way to get something similar with settings?
@ david: Addon you mentioned was working for me a few years ago last time. I remember doing an update and it stopped working for me. Since then I have the same issue.
The setting can be found at General - Reading & Display The option is "Close message window/tab on move or delete".
"Close message window/tab on move or delete" does not work either for this purpose.
Imagine this: you have a list: 1,2,3,4,5 Number 2 is an email you want to delete- it is currently selected, you read it and delete it. When number 2 is deleted, the list is shuffled, so number 3 now becomes number 2 - which as you know was selected. So it remains selected, but obviously now displays the contents of what was the number 3 email. This sounds like what you are talking about.
If you select a folder but you do not select and open any email, instead right click on email in list and select 'delete', you will find the next email is not selected because nothing was previously selected, so the list reshuffle will also not select anything.
This is a workaround I have used if I really do not want any email to get selected after a delete. If you want to delete a particular message - lets say it has the word 'message' in the subject. You have selected that email and it's open - you have read it and want to delete it. Use 'Quick Filter' - in search type 'Message' and select to filter on 'Subject' It will display that email - now you can select it if required to check contents and then click on delete. Then clear the Quick Filter using the small x to return to list. You should find nothing is selected.

Me too! I just installed the add-on "Deselect on Delete TB78 3.7" https://services.addons.thunderbird.net/EN-US/thunderbird/addon/deselect-on-delete-tb78/ It works for me in both versions 140-esr and 150-release Of course it is meant to be used by people who open messages in the message pane and not in tabs or new windows.

It is weird why it does not work in my case! But I see this issue asked by many people before and they said the same thing that this add-on stopped working for them.
I thought maybe it is related to the other extensions I have. However, I removed all and reset everything and still it has this bug that it moves to the next email, reads it, and then deselect. I am also talking about message panel view.

Thank you! It was very useful! I started approaching with the same manner now. Definitely, it is less annoying now. However, I do not understand what is that difficult to add this as a setting in Thunderbird.
I tried to code my own add-on to handle this issue, but so far only failed :)
I know it is a community driven platform, but is there someone that I can communicate this clearly and get more definitive solution. Because I see this issue been in the blogs for several years already and complained by many.
