In the folder pane next to the folder name in an open circle with a number inside it. What is that?

I finally figured out there were 5 unread messages in a subfolder of the folder that had the open circle next to it. Mystery solved!

There are two possibilities: 1. total message count 2. unread message count
The number is 5. Several hundred total messages in folder, no unread messages.
If you hover over the line or circle with your mouse it reveals "unread messages". That is, messages which are in bold. Which is not the same as "new messages".
