Here's what I did: - Copied the <Thunderbird/Profiles> folder - Uninstalled Thunderbird 60 - Installed Thunderbird 68 - Copied <Profiles> folder into new copy of Thunderbird - There was no Address Book, completely blank.

How do I get my Address Book back?

I have an Aug copy of <Profiles> that might have the Address Book in it but it will not have all E-mails. What files, exactly, would I need to copy from the Aug Profile to the new copy of Thunderbird to get my Address Book back (if that is possible)?

Any and all help is appreciated. I REALLY do not want to reconstruct my Address Book, it have 700+ addresses...

UPDATED: Just realised as yet have not created the Default User Profile.

Start Thunderbird via the Profile Manager Press Windows Key +R on the keyboard. A Run dialog will open. In the Run dialog box, type in: thunderbird.exe -P That is 'thunderbird.exe' then a space then '-P' then select the profile name eg: default-release select checkbox 'don't ask at startup' click on 'Start Thunderbird'

Then go through process as mentioned previously to create the 'Default User' profile and point to wf4j06jp.default.

I've tried to respond to your last 2-3 times but my response does not show up on this page. Did you get it?

I cannot open Thunderbird so I cannot change the Default Profile.

Did you manage to open the 'Profile Manager' using thunderbird.exe -P? It does not need Thunderbird to be running. In fact Thunderbird must be closed. I have no idea whether you are doing this or not as you have not mentioned anything.

Try again doing the following.

Start Thunderbird via the Profile Manager Press Windows Key +R on the keyboard. A Run dialog will open. In the Run dialog box, type in: thunderbird.exe -P That is 'thunderbird.exe' then a space then '-P' Then press 'Entre/Return' key

click on 'Create Profile' click on 'Next' Type a Profile name or use the 'Default User' Click on 'Choose Folder' button locate and select the C:/Users/User Account/Appdata /Roaming/Thunderbird/ Profiles/'wf4j06jp.default' folder click on 'Finish

In Profile Manager select that new profile you just created. select checkbox 'Use the selected profile without asking at start up' click on 'Start Thunderbird'

Look in this forum using a browser to read the comments. I can see all of yours and yes you have been repeating them as they are showing up in this forum question. Refresh the page.

Now I see your reply. It looks like that worked. I can start Tbird, I have my Address Book back, and I have all the e-mails up through Sep 11. Great! Thank you very much!! How do I get my e-mail from Sep 11 thru today?

Logon to webmail account using a browser. Please tell me if those emails from 11th onwards to date are on the server and they are in the 'Inbox' folder?

In Thunderbird What type of mail account are you using? Right click on mail account name folder in folder Pane and select 'Settings' Select 'Server Settings' What is written a the top on the right side for 'Server Type' ?

(You asked): Logon to webmail account using a browser. Please tell me if those emails from 11th onwards to date are on the server and they are in the 'Inbox' folder?

(My answer): I simply waited a while and the E-mails downloaded from AOL to Tbird. It looks like I am up to date.

(You asked): In Thunderbird - What type of mail account are you using? Right click on mail account name folder in folder Pane and select 'Settings'. Select 'Server Settings'. What is written a the top on the right side for 'Server Type'?

(My answer): "IMAP Mail Server"

(My next question): When I open "About Profiles", there are 3 Profiles listed:

Root Directory: C:\Users\test\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\xvb0t9dq.default-release Local Directory: C:\Users\test\AppData\Local\Thunderbird\Profiles\xvb0t9dq.default-release

Root Directory: C:\Users\test\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\k5h81p72.default Local Directory: C:\Users\test\AppData\Local\Thunderbird\Profiles\k5h81p72.default

Root Directory: C:\Users\test\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\wf4j06jp.default Local Directory: C:\Users\test\AppData\Local\Thunderbird\Profiles\wf4j06jp.default

<wf4j06jp.default> is the Default Profile.

Is it OK to remove the 2 Profiles that are not being used (that are not the Default)?

When the Profile is changed or updated, does Thunderbird make changes to both the file in the Roaming directory and the Local directory? Are these 2 Profiles (one in Roaming and one in Local) exactly the same?

I apologize - I'm slow on the uptake. I just realized that there are now 2 pages of questions and answers on the web site. My answers/comments were being posted but I could not see them because they were on page 2. Sorry.

Thank you for all your help.

re :Is it OK to remove the 2 Profiles that are not being used (that are not the Default)? I would leave them alone. xvb0t9dq.default-release has been specially made in case you decide or need to use a version of Thunderbird prior to 68. The powers that be say it is because there are a few important changes in files which mean you should use a different profile for profiles prior to 68. they claim the changes would make the current profile vulnerable to corruption. As yet, I'm not sure of the actual details.

re :When the Profile is changed or updated, does Thunderbird make changes to both the file in the Roaming directory and the Local directory?

No. Changes usually only occur in the Thunderbird program itself and not in the profile. However, sometimes new files are added to the current profile should the updates in the program require new files. In this case any update would be done to the 'Roaming' profile.

re :Are these 2 Profiles (one in Roaming and one in Local) exactly the same?'' The 'Roaming' and 'Local' profiles are not the same. Only the 'Roaming' one is used by Thunderbird and it is where the emails, etc are stored. Only windows OS maintains the 'Local'. This is not Thunderbird doing anything in the 'Local' profiles.

Ok thanks.

Now I have a new problem. Tbird has been running very slow. 3 minutes to open an e-mail, 2 minutes to move the cursor within an e-mail, etc. So, I thought I would re-install Tbird 68.

As I understand the way this works, I should be able to simply run <Thunderbird Setup 68.0.exe> and it will overwrite the existing Tbird program (which is 68) but will not affect my Profile. After I ran the exe, I got a message from Tbird telling me that I am trying to run an older version (I don't think that's true) and that I must either Quit or create a new Profile and start all over again with the setup of my e-mail accounts.

I clicked Quit and I assumed I would go back to the version I had before I ran the exe - not so. When I clicked on the Tbird icon on my Desktop, I got the same message. So, my choices are not run Tbird at all or create a new Profile.

Right now AOL is downloading my e-mails (several thousand). Once that is done, can I copy my backup Profile into Tbird and get back my other e-mail accounts and all my setup?

re :As I understand the way this works, I should be able to simply run <Thunderbird Setup 68.0.exe>

Is that a file you downloaded previously ? Are you certain version 68 did not update to version 68.1.0 ? So when you tried to run version 68.0 it thought it was going backwards?

The latest Thunderbird is version 68.1.0, have you tried: Uninstalling the current version on computer. Downloading and installing 'Windows 32 bit' version 68.1.0 https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/all/

If it does not pick correct profile, then access 'about:profiles' and select the wf4j06jp.default profile by clicking 'Set as default profile' click on 'Launch profile in new browser' Then close the originally opened Thunderbird.

You asked if I have <C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\> in the <Program Files> folder - I DO.

You asked if I have <C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\> in the <Program Files (x86)> folder - I do NOT.

You didn't ask but in the <Program Files (x86)> folder, I DO have <C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Maintenance Service>

(You asked): re :As I understand the way this works, I should be able to simply run <Thunderbird Setup 68.0.exe> Is that a file you downloaded previously ?

(My answer): Yes, as far as I know.

(You asked): Are you certain version 68 did not update to version 68.1.0 ?

(My answer): Right now, I have v68.1.0 (64-bit), so I assume that's the version I downloaded and installed (unless Tbird did some automatic updating).

(You asked): So when you tried to run version 68.0 it thought it was going backwards?

(My answer): That's the message I got.

I will uninstall Thunderbird completely, then re-install v68.1.0 32-bit, then copy the Profile that I know works (<wf4j06jp.default>). I will make <wf4j06jp.default> the default Profile and then I think I will remove all other Profiles.

I was slow in answering your latest because I am having all sorts of Windows problems. I don't know if these problems are associated with my Tbird problems or not. For example, over the past week: Windows Search stopped working, File Explorer takes 3-4 minutes to open, Windows takes 15-16 minutes to re-boot. I talked to Microsoft Tech Support and after an hour of messing around, they told me I need to update the BIOS. I have not attempted that yet, as you know there are dangers associated with updating BIOS.

Please don't give up on me. I'll let you know the results of my uninstall/reinstall. Thanks for your help.

You have not posted any feedback on this as yet.

If you did the above - install v68.1.0 32-bit, did it create a new profile called '*.default release'?

You asked: "If you did the above - install v68.1.0 32-bit, did it create a new profile called '*.default release'?"

My answer: Yes, but I am not using that Profile. I copied my old Profile from Sep 15 (<wf4j06jp.default<) and it seems to be working fine. Another Profile was created (<mi4ccv3q.Cal 2>), I don't know why. I am not using that Profile either. </p>

Also, my problem of slow boot (15+ minutes) resolved itself, don't know why. I did nothing and a couple of days ago I started the machine and it booted normally. Is it possible the slow boot was caused by Tbird 64 bit?

There is no BIOS update on the HP web site. HP would not tell me whether a BIOS update exists unless I paid them $59.99.

Don't know whether you will see this... Tbird seems to be working ok so far. Had a strange thing (?) happen yesterday. I opened Tbird and it started looking for e-mails to download (normal business). I used it the day before and downloaded all available e-mails the night before. When I opened it yesterday, Tbird found 2600+ e-mails and began downloading them. One e-mail every 15-20 seconds - it took hours. Today, no problem.
