Hey there, I used to save my session with lots of open tabs by right-clicking on a tab and choose 'bookmarks for all tabs' or smth. That function seems to be gone since the last update of firefox? Is that 4 real? Thank you very much!

Okay, after further research (and testing in Firefox 65):

The item on the right-click context menu now is sensitive to whether you have selected tabs:

  • Only one active/selected tab: "Bookmark Tab" - applies to the right-clicked tab
  • Multi-selected tabs: "Bookmark Tabs... - applies to the selected tabs

How does multi-selecting work? It's similar to file selection in Windows Explorer:

To add tabs to your selection (the current tab is already included), you can either:

  • Ctrl+click another tab to add it to the selection
  • Shift+click a tab further down the bar to select a range of tabs
  • right-click any tab > Select All Tabs

Tabs in the selection will all have the blue line along the top like the active tab. It's a little subtle...

To remove a single tab from the selection, Ctrl+click it again.

To cancel the selection, left-click any tab.

Is that what you see in Firefox Beta (Firefox 64)?

Edit: The Ctrl+Shift+d keyboard shortcut (or on Mac Command+Shift+d) should still work. The command should still be available on the Bookmarks menu that drops from the classic menu bar if you trigger it using the keyboard: Alt+b.

Hello Hillbilly_aka_TheyT00kOurJobs,

Would you please take a look at this article :

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-do-i-restore-my-tabs-last-time

Any good  ?

more options

Thanks a lot McCoy!

only thing is I never let firefox create a history or have it deleted everytime I close the browser. So the bookmark-all-tabs-option was more comfortable for me...

Hi Hillbilly_aka_TheyT00kOurJobs, I see it in Firefox 63 but not in Firefox Nightly (future Firefox 65). I can't explain why it's missing.

I guess we'll find out how many people use this feature as we start to get new posts like yours!

As a workaround until we find it somewhere else, you can use either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+d keyboard shortcut
  • (menu bar) Bookmarks > Bookmark All Tabs
If you don't normally display the classic menu bar, tap the Alt key or F10 to show it temporarily

How about pressing Ctrl + Shift + D and then save those tabs to a new folder  ?

Would that work for you  ?

more options

I think it would be:

  1. Select All Tabs
  2. Bookmark Tabs

With multiple tabs selected "Bookmark Tab" changes to "Bookmark Tabs", so you can select the tabs you want to save (Range: Shift; Single: Ctrl).

When I press Ctrl + Shift + D it opens the context menu where one can choose to save the open tabs in a new folder .....

Hey @all, thanks for the quick help!

@McCoy, yes, the Ctrl + Shift + D + Folder was the trick I used the last weeks, but took longer as the old way, of course, still, thank you a lot for the fast help! :) @cor-el @jscher2000 thank you so much, that really is the solution! I found the 'select all tabs' option, but never noticed the bookmark option. Actually thats a cool new feature since you can also reload all or even just a few tabs at once now. Maybe a shortcut for selecting or deselecting [edit/] all tabs at once / would be handy too... Thanks a lot you all, case closed!

I have this same issue. Why would Firefox take away such a simple elegant option? Now I have more clicks to achieve the same result.

BTW when I click on Bookmarks in version 64.0 I don't have a Bookmark All Tabs option. :-(

Are you still running Windows? Does the Ctrl+Shift+d keyboard shortcut call up Bookmark All Tabs or is the function completely missing?

Edit: Adding screenshot from new profile test.

Yes on Windows. Ctl Shift D works - just not as convenient as right click as it used to be.

Do you think it is because I am on 64 and you said you were testing on 65?

Do you have any idea why mozilla does things like taking away a functionality like this?

more options

Hi packrules9, I'm using Firefox 64 now. I still have the Bookmarks menu item, but some users do not for reasons I cannot explain.

No one has the tabs context menu item because it has switched to Bookmark Tab (only active tab selected) or Bookmark Tabs (meaning the selected tabs).

Quote: I'm using Firefox 64 now. I still have the Bookmarks menu item, but some users do not for reasons I cannot explain.

The explanation is easy. The "Bookmark All Tabs" menu item has class="show-only-for-keyboard" and thus only shows when you use the keyboard to access the menu bar (e.g. Alt+B). If you have code in userChrome.css to make such hidden menu items visible then you see them when you click the menu bar with the mouse.

userChrome.css :

@namespace url("http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul"); /* only needed once */

/* Always show menu entries with class="show-only-for-keyboard" */
#main-menubar[openedwithkey=false] .show-only-for-keyboard {display:-moz-box !important;}

Hi - that response is way over my pay-grade.  :-) I have made changes to firefox using config - but I have no idea what userChrome.css is.

more options

Hi packrules9, if you are interested in modifying the user interface beyond what settings offer, the userChrome.css file is an option file you can created. I set up a website last year with more info if you're interested: https://www.userchrome.org/

Is it possible to do this, but for the right-click context menu (clicking on the titlebar?)

That's how I used "Bookmark All Tabs" before. The menu is hidden and having to open menu first kind of defeats the purpose - it still needs more clicks than before.

Hi Andrew, on the tab context menu, the old Bookmark All Tabs command was replaced by Bookmark {Selected} Tabs so there's no hidden Bookmark All Tabs command to reveal with a custom style rule.

I'm surprised no one posted an add-on for this yet (as far as I can tell). https://www.jeffersonscher.com/sumo/extensions.php?q=bookmark%20all%20tabs

There are a couple session-oriented extensions that save to bookmarks. Perhaps one of these will be interesting:

THANK YOU jscher2000 for allowing me to get back this functionality, I genuinely appreciate it and people like you who are so kind and generous with their time helping total strangers. You're a truly good person and you give me a little hope for humanity.

That said, and this has nothing to do with you, but I have to say this somewhere. This is just another ridiculous and insane decision my Mozilla. Why remove this functionality? The ability to still perform the action still exists, but now you have to go through these circuitous esoteric solutions that are completely hostile and largely unknown to the user.

How many people will know Ctrl-Shift-D? .05%? Or Alt-B. Or even just ALT to bring up the classic menu bar? (I didn't, and I consider myself a pretty sophisticated user, having used computers since the Commodore 64). A LOT of people like to bookmark all their tabs at the end of a session, to provide a layer of protection to the work or research etc. they've been doing. The idea that someone just decided it would be a good idea to remove a very simple but very important menu option, that has been part of the browser for many years, with no warning, further demonstrates Mozilla's total disconnect from its users.

What was gained by doing this? I'd love to know.

If I have to go through google searches and message boards to find out how to "bookmark all tabs", that should be an indication that you're doing something wrong.

I'm with ya on this. Maybe programmers get the itch to change something because they can't leave well-enough alone? (Sigh)

I also 'sometimes' don't see 'Bookmark All Tabs'. I do when I use the keyboard command of Alt-B, however. (Or use Control-SHIFT-D. I don't like this pop-up box not adequately describing that ALL TABS are being Bookmarked like the other pop-up box did before the change.)
